敘利亞負責古文物暨博物館的官員阿布德卡林證實，中東遜尼派聖戰組織「伊斯蘭國」（IS），23日炸毀中部霍姆斯省帕米拉古城內2千年歷史的巴爾夏明神廟。
這是今年5月IS占領帕米拉以來，首度毀壞古羅馬時期的遺址，考古學界憂心IS摧毀古物的文化浩劫不幸再度上演。聯合國教科文組織（UNESCO）總幹事波科娃女士痛斥IS此舉犯了「戰爭罪」。
巴爾夏明神廟是帕米拉第2重要的神廟，建於公元17年，供奉腓尼基的暴風雨之神與帶來沃土的雨水之神；公元130年，羅馬帝國哈德良大帝統治時予以擴建。附近同為古羅馬時期遺跡的貝爾神廟，目前則命運未卜，它建於公元32年左右，供奉閃族尊崇的貝爾天神，乃帕米拉古城內「保存最完好」的遺跡。
阿布德卡林說自己眼睜睜看著神廟遭破壞：「達伊沙（IS的阿拉伯語縮寫）在巴爾夏明神廟內放置大量炸藥，接著引爆，造成神廟嚴重毀損。神廟的內殿遭炸毀，周圍廊柱倒塌。」
今年5月21日，IS從敘利亞政府軍手中搶下帕米拉古城。敘國當局表示，帕米拉古城遭占領之前，他們已將數百件古文物移至安全地點，以免遭IS毀掉。
IS在6月底以大鐵錘砸毀帕米拉博物館外2千年歷史的「拉特女神之獅」雕像。本月18日，IS在帕米拉古城將高齡82歲的知名考古學者阿薩德斬首，並將其遺體吊在主廣場的1根羅馬廊柱上。他被IS拘禁審問1個多月，IS試圖從他口中得到古城的寶物珍藏地點，但沒有成功。
